29 Nov 2011Full-time counselling available for pregnant women with sickle cell disease
A FULL time NHS counselling service is to be launched in Northamptonshire for pregnant women diagnosed with inherited blood conditions, such as sickle-cell disease, and their partners.
The Specialist Sickle Cell and thalassaemia nurse counsellor was previously only a part-time service, and the move means capacity will double, allowing more patients to be seen.
Dr Darin Seiger, chairman of the Nene Commissioning group of GPs, said although exact numbers of people with each condition were unknown, Northamptonshire was acknowledged to be an area of high prevalence for both.
