Counselling is ‘crisis intervention’

I first went to counselling when I was in my mid 20’s. I was feeling intensely miserable with no understanding of why I felt this way.

Like many people who go for counselling, I just wanted help; beyond this I couldn’t tell you what I expected.

However, listening to people in everyday life, the idea that you only go for counselling or psychotherapy when you are seriously not functioning is still the norm. For ordinary people everyday unhappiness – whose root is often hidden in our childhood experiences – people often go to the doctors for anti-depressants.
