Personal experiences of counselling and psychotherapy
Parties were torture
After I refused to come out of our bedroom during the jubilee party going on downstairs, next door and in the street, I knew I had to get myself and my extreme shyness sorted out. I found a therapist who mixed CBT with other approaches and I liked the sound of how she liked to work with anxiety issues. I kept ‘thought diaries’ and learned to challenge my negative thoughts when they cropped up (which was all the time). I valued our talking time in the sessions, too – I felt I could trust her completely, even with the things I almost can’t admit to myself. It took a while before I felt comfortable in big social situations, but as someone who has always loathed parties it is amazing that I can now accept an invitation without spending the next month inventing different reasons why I won’t be going after all.
