About me and my therapy practice

Hello, my name is Jenny.  I imagine if you’re reading this page you are dealing with some difficult issues. I am a fully qualified, Registered BACP Counsellor and Therapist, with over 20 years’ experience in university counselling, mental health charity work and private practice. If you are experiencing depression, anxiety and stress you rarely feel your true self; but counselling can enable you to make life easier to cope with and to understand your problems, and then put them in perspective. Allowing you to take responsibility for your own change and deciding on new courses of action.

Counselling gives you the opportunity to look at what's going on in your life in a secure and reassuring environment. It enables you to look at your past, understand what's happening now and reflect on how you wish to live in the future. Talking with a counsellor can help loosen-up set patterns of thought and behaviour, and enable you to identify new directions for meaningful change .

I completed a Certificate in Counselling Skills with COSCA (Counselling in Scotland) and trained at the Edinburgh Gestalt Institute (EGI) as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I gained my Post Grad Diploma after four years. I undertook training in Switzerland with the Gestalt Associates Training Los Angles (GATLA). I have continued to invest time in my Continuous Professional Development (CPD). Among numerous courses I have completed are Body Work with the renowned American practitioner Michael Clemmens; the Applied Suicide Intervention Training (ASIST); and have I attended courses in Domestic Violence, Family Constellations, Body and Shame, Disillusionment and Pessimism.

Practice description

I have been passionate about counselling and psychotherapy since I began my training 21 years ago. I feel very privileged that so many people have worked with me to change their lives. As an Existential therapist, I am interested in who you are, who you wish to be and will focus on you as a whole person. I regard you as a completely unique person with a capacity to face life's difficulties in your own special way. You are you, I will not judge you, only try to understand what brings you to counselling and how, together, we can work to make your life after counselling, better.

All of us have difficulties in our lives. Looking at ourselves closely to understand how we do what we do, has the potential to bring self-awareness and the ability to reflect and thus enable us to live more fulfilled lives; this self-understanding can positively affect those we love, live and work with. The Existential Approach to therapy seeks to assist people to see their lives in a new way and to live with a greater sense of meaning and purpose.

My first session

I have tried to make my dedicated consulting room a serene, calm and welcoming room for both individuals and couples, although I realise that it is decorated to my own taste. Many clients are understandably cautious about beginning to talk to a counsellor, wondering how to tell me why they have come.

So in our first session we will talk about what it is that has led you to consider counselling and what you are hoping for. The purpose of the session is to put you at your ease and to give you the opportunity to decide whether you wish to continue to take counselling sessions with me. This session, a paid-for session, lasts 55minutes.  I will take assessment notes which are entirely confidential and covered by Data Protection Codes.
