About me and my therapy practice

My training is in psychodynamic and person-centred methods, and I integrate these approaches in my work.  I have over 17 years of experience as a therapist, working mainly in private practice.  Although most of my work is via talking therapy, I sometimes draw on creative methods if that feels helpful, productive and safe for clients.

My main standpoint is that clients are experts on themselves. My role is to facilitate connection with those parts of the self (or life) which might be getting in the way of living fully. This work takes place within a safe and non-judgemental therapeutic relationship.

I am committed to my Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and regularly attend relevant and approved events.  Recent CPD training I have attended includes: working with couples, making trauma safer (with Babette Rothschild), attachment trauma and the body. I have also recently gained a Certificate in Adoption Support Counselling from the Albany Centre, 2022. This qualifies me to work with adults around adoption issues.

In addition to being a counsellor, I am also a social psychology researcher and have a PhD in social psychology.

Practice description

Sometimes we can find ourselves struggling in life and need a non-judgemental space to help us make sense of how we are feeling or why we are feeling that way.  I offer a safe, non-judgemental and confidential space for you to come and talk about whatever is troubling you.  Perhaps you are experiencing challenges which are impacting on your relationships, self-esteem and general mood.  We will work together to explore and better understand what is going on for you. This might involve identifying unhelpful patterns of thinking and relating, which may be linked to past events and relationships. It might also involve identifying factors in the social environment which might be preventing you from thriving.

I work with a range of  emotional and relational matters including low self- esteem, loss, relationship difficulties, abuse, work related issues, ageing, illness, general low-mood and anxiety.

About me and my therapy practice

My training is in psychodynamic and person-centred methods, and I integrate these approaches in my work. I have over 17 years of experience as a therapist, working mainly in private practice.

I am a qualified supervisor and work with trainee and experienced therapists.  My supervision training is Adlerian and I work with supervisees trained, or training in different therapeutic approaches.

I offer concessionary rates to trainee counsellors.

My supervision work is supported by my experience of teaching on undergraduate counselling and psychology courses.  I also offer supervision to practitioners from other fields of work such as social work or family support work.

Practice description

I offer an encouraging and supportive environment to help you explore and work effectively and ethically with your clients.

Although primarily, client work is explored via dialogue, we may also use creative methods to facilitate this exploration.

I attend to the three functions of supervision comprising: the formative function ( the ‘educational’ aspects of supervision eg - developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities); the normative function ( thinking about ethical practice and competencies to practise); and last, but certainly, not least, the restorative function (which attends to the holistic wellbeing of the supervisee).

CPD in relation to supervision is important to me and I have recently attended workshops on creative methods in supervision and working with trauma and the body.

My first session

I offer free first sessions.

The first session is to get to know one another and find out a little about the way we both work. It's an opportunity to think about whether we can work effectively and creatively with one another.
