About me and my therapy practice

I am a registered integrative counsellor and psychotherapist with an established experience in academia and client work. I trained clinical psychology and worked in hospitals and psychiatric facilities in the Philippines and Singapore. Added into my portfolio is my graduate training in therapeutic counselling in the United Kingdom.

I have extensive training in psychoanalysis and integration, in which I translated into a long-standing private practice. I share my expertise with clients on a personal and professional level. My therapeutic goal is to empower clients by taking responsibility for their own behaviour change with the use of creative techniques such as dialogue, introspection, narratives, play, arts, self-discovery, emotion-focused, behaviour modification, etc.

In the tradition of integration, I adapt to a user-centred approach to match the changing needs of clients. I believe that empathic listening, with a provision of trust and respect, is an effective way to establish therapeutic relationships with clients. I consider individual circumstances of my clients; hence, I am open to flexibility in terms fees, time and day and mode of sessions (i.e., face-to-face or online).

Practice description

Counselling will occur only at the agreed mode of session and/or location (i.e., face-to-face or online, via Zoom). Each session is scheduled before hand, where both you (the client) and myself should agree. Each session will last for 50 minutes as scheduled.

Cancellation of an appointment with less than 24 hours notice or failure to show for an appointment will incur the full fee.

I take several weeks’ holiday per year; I will let you know of these dates well in advance. There may also be occasions when I cannot attend your session because of illness or because of attending training sessions or meetings. I will try to give you as much notice as possible of any cancellation, and I will offer an alternative time.

The length of the relationship will be negotiated - we might work together for a few weeks and then review things. It is important for you to know that it is you, as the client, who has the deciding say on whether or not to continue.

It is hoped (and intended) that our therapeutic relationship will have helped to overcome the presenting problems/difficulties sufficient to enable you to develop a greater purpose and autonomy in your life without the support and continuation of further counselling.

It may also be possible that our work together may have successfully highlighted the need for me to recommend a referral to another counselling/psychotherapist practitioner for some form of specialist therapy etc. beyond the scope of my professional training and experience.

My first session

I refer the first session as 'intake session' that aims to set a safe and trusting environment to discuss your expectations from the counselling process and clarify your idea of counselling and the help you expect from me. Knowing what to expect during your intake session can help you feel more prepared.

I usually start with getting to know each other with the aim to get an idea of how we proceed in the counselling work. Essential process in intake session is to assess whether there is a good fit for your needs, and going over what you want to accomplish in counselling.

It is equally important to come to an agreement about my expectations from you, including the length of your session, methods to be employed, scope and limits of our work and ins and outs of confidentiality.

The succeeding sessions will be more therapeutic in nature, for example, we may explore a specific symptom, problem, or past trauma you mentioned in the intake session.

About me and my therapy practice

I am a registered integrative counsellor and psychotherapist with an established experience in academia - providing lectures, seminars and workshops, mentoring students, supervising counselling trainees, and developing curricula, learning resources and assessments. As a lecturer, I teach and develop counselling and psychology courses from Diploma to the Degree levels. Included in my specialisations are integrative counselling, psychotherapy, social psychology, cognitive psychology, personality, psychopathology and research methods. My approach to teaching, training and curriculum development is influenced by andragogical model. My teaching and training pedagogy includes guided inter-dependent learning that aims to develop investigative skills, critical thinking and skills and theory application to practice. With the use of evidence-based models, I combine the cognitive and constructivist traditions with behaviourist and humanist frameworks and employ a specialised curriculum that would facilitate effective learning and proficiency training for counselling students.
