I specialise in working with mental health problems, anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, flashbacks, abuse, suicidal thoughts, and sexual violence. However, this does not mean you have had to experience any of these to have counselling. It may be that you feel a bit down, or you've had a loss, a change in circumstance, or a difficult relationship, or want to reflect on your life. There are so many reasons to get counselling and you don’t have to wait until it all feels a bit ‘too much’ to start.

Practice description

I believe that counselling will look different for every person because we are all so individual. It may be you would like a space to talk and be heard, or to learn practical techniques (such as ‘grounding’ exercises), or explain how your brain and body are working to protect you after experiencing trauma / loss / abuse. I also offer a space if you wish to do mindfulness, colouring, drawing, painting, clay or therapeutic games.

The framework of counselling I offer is called ‘Gestalt’, it means that it’s important for me to be real and to be myself, this can be helpful for people who may struggle with the formal or clinical side of counselling. I believe we are all made up of different ‘parts’ and that working out what these are and accepting them can empower us to be more of who we truly are. These parts may be how we think, feel, or act, or it can be social, cultural, sexual or spiritual parts too.

I also offer counselling to young people and adults with themes relating to the Christian faith and spirituality; this may be anything from needing an empathetic space to explore your faith, to experiences of spiritual abuse.

How Counselling Can Help

Life can sometimes feel quite busy or confusing. Counselling allows a space for you to reflect on what’s going on for you with someone that’s not part of your day to day life. It can help you gain some awareness and open up choices for yourself. Awareness allows the body to start processing and this can alleviate the ways the body may cope and keep you safe (such as heightened anxiety or feeling low).

My first session

It can feel quite daunting going to counselling, and so please be assured that counsellors can’t read minds, we are not analysing you to find something wrong or to declare your worst fears. When I meet you for the first time I just want to hear from you: what are you looking for? What are you expecting from the therapy? (If you are) and really what I’m trying to find out is this; how can I support you best.

The sessions I offer are 50mins long and I’ll aim to give you a heads up before the end. You don’t need to bring anything with you but you’re welcome to if it’s helpful or a comfort. I’ll talk you through the confidentiality agreement (e.g. what I won’t share with others and what I might need to), as well as a contract of agreement (what we both agree to for the sessions). If at any point it feels a bit much and you want to talk about something else (like what’s on Netflix) or leave the room, you can without any judgement.
