About me and my therapy practice

Healing takes time, and asking for help is a courageous step. (Mariska Hargitay)

Hi my name is Helen and I have over 20 years experience of working with children and adolescents in an educational and a mental health capacity. I work from my dedicated therapy room at home in Leighton Buzzard. I have an MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling & Psychotherapy with Children & Adolescents and have been working as a therapist with young people for the past 6 years.

I wholeheartedly believe that ... behind every behaviour is a feeling and behind that feeling there is a need. When we meet the need instead of focussing on the behaviour we begin to treat the cause, not the symptom.

Practice description

You never have to apologise for being yourself.

I practise psychodynamic psychotherapy, a longer term talking therapy, which also utilises creative and symbolic play for younger children. My therapy room provides a safe, non-judgemental space for a young person to come and just 'be'. They will communicate what is on their mind through talking, being creative or playing. As themes evolve, we are able to think and reflect together on what it is they are bringing to their sessions each week. My therapy is not about giving advice or telling a young person what to do, as often they have plenty of adults doing that. Our therapy sessions will be about working together. Where I can help and support them in finding a way through that is right for them.

"Just because no on else can heal or do your inner work for you doesn't mean you have to do it alone" (Lisa Olivera)

My first session

There is nothing more important than your mental health.

I often find that work starts best with a consultation phone call with the parent/carer or young person (dependent on the age of the child).

Next, would be an initial meeting in my therapy room with the child/young person and parent/carer, as appropriate, for around 20 mins. This first meeting is free of charge.

If the young person then wishes to go ahead with therapy, then I usually recommend starting with three full (50 min) sessions on a weekly basis to give them the chance to get to know me and the space in which we will be working together.

After this period, work can continue, weekly, for as long as the child/young person feels they would like to.

It's ok not to be ok. Just don't give up.

The more you feel your feelings, the easier it is to understand them.
