About me and my therapy practice

Hello, my name is Tammy and thank you for having a look through my profile.

I would describe myself as a warm and friendly counsellor who is based in Liverpool. You can find me under Cathartic Counselling.

Seeking counselling and asking for support can feel really scary, but it also shows me you have strength and courage and something needs to change.

I have been in that confusing place - wanting help yet unsure what that looks like or where to find it. I was scared to do it on my own and made a choice to start counselling. Feeling those uncomfortable emotions was something I need to do in order to feel better and move forward.

There is still a lot of stigma attached to counselling and I really want to change that. Most of the time our physical health is considered more of a priority and it feels easier to visit a dentist for tooth ache or a doctor for a sore foot.

Lets change this narrative!

Our mental and emotional health is essential for our overall wellbeing. I am very passionate about counselling as it can be life changing and can really support you mentally and emotionally.

Counselling can also help you to understand of yourself better, feel your feelings, gain clarity and perspective which in turn will help you feel lighter, calmer and more in control.

Practice description

My counselling style

I have an integrative approach to counselling which consists of person centred, psychodynamic, inner-child work, hypnotherapy and cognitive behaviour therapy. I believe you are unique and the expert in yourself which helps me tailor therapy to suit your needs.

Sessions may involve you talking through specific issues or you might want to have more general discussions about how you're feeling. I may offer information and suggestions, but I will not tell you what you should think or do.

I will encourage you to open up about your struggles. Counselling is a journey and can open up painful feelings. The emotional work can be draining, making you feel initially vulnerable and or sensitive. However, the opposite is to embrace the therapeutic process, allowing yourself to explore, unpick and peel back those layers, which can lead you to feel so empowered, lighter, calmer and more self-confident.

Can I go to counselling if I am not struggling?

Yes.

People come for counselling for all kinds of reasons, whether that means help with a specific reason such as a mental health issue, struggling and needing support or wanting to reach a specific goal in life.

People also attend counselling as part of self-care to check-in with themselves mentally and emotionally.

You do not need to do this journey on your own, my door is open when you are ready.

My first session

What next?

If you feel something resonates with you, contact me for a chat. I offer a free 20-minute phone call consultation.

This is designed to see if you feel comfortable speaking to me and helps me to understand what you are going through.  There is no requirement to commit after our phone call.

If you feel comfortable with me, then we check our availability and book you in for your first session.

I will send you an appointment and some information, such as my "Working Together Agreement", which explains the structure of how I work as a counsellor.

In your first session

We will go through the working together agreement and I will gather more information about your mental health, lifestyle, what your goals are and what you would like to achieve from counselling. Which helps me tailor your therapy through an holistic approach (you as a whole unique person).

Being able to talk to me honestly about your thoughts, feelings and struggles is all part of building our therapeutic relationship. The relationship between client and counsellor is very unique, rewarding and an important one.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no right answer.

Everyone is different and every situation and or experience is different, but this is something we work through together. I offer open and closed ended sessions which we discuss in your first session and review periodically.

**I do however ask you to please bear in mind that counselling is a process that takes time. I warmly encourage at least six sessions to experience the benefits.
